I often get asked about tips & tricks for the iPhone & iPad, so thought I would put a page together, and add to it as I go along. Most of these have been scheduled as “a tip a day” on my Twitter @MarcForrest
- In the camera app, tap the screen to bring up the zoom control, then use the slider to zoom in and out up to 5x.
- Tap the space bar twice, and iPhone adds a full stop and capitalises the next word
- Take a screenshot by holding the Home & Sleep button.Your screenshot appears in your Camera Roll
- In Settings -> Messages -> Character Count. Character count now appears in your SMS’s
- In Safari, touch and hold an image to save it to your Camera Roll or to copy
- In most apps, tap the status bar at the top of the screen to scroll quickly to the top of the screen
- Double-click the Home button & swipe from left to right. You can now turn on lock orientation
- In Maps touch and hold anywhere to drop a pin so you can find an address get directions or see street view
- Tap the Location button in Maps twice to use the built-in compass and see the direction you are facing
- While shooting video or photos, tap the screen where you want to focus.
- In Safari, you can press and hold any links in order to see the URL and site name of the link.
- Dismiss the keyboard suggested spelling of a word by tapping anywhere of the screen
- Hold down the “.com” button, you can see a popup comes up with “.net, .edu and .org” buttons
- When typing a URL in Safari, you don’t have to type the “www” or the “.com”
- You can tap the bottom right or left corner of your screen to switch between screens
- Hold down a letter on the keyboard, you can see popup comes up with various versions of the character
- When browsing web pages, you can double tap on a column, word or picture to fit it to your iPhone screen
- Press and hold the “Home” Button and the “Sleep” Button to Reset your iPhone if it stops responding
- Tap on any phone number in Safari and it will call it using the phone application
- Double tap the home button while iPhone is locked to bring up iPod Controls
- Double tap the Shift key to lock it onto Capital letters
- In apps that use lists, you can swipe from L to R to bring up a delete button
- In the Calculator app, turn to Landscape to get a scientific calculator
- iPhone earphones can also control volume & answer calls using the button on the earphone
- To silence a call, press the Sleep or either volume button. You can still answer the call after silencing it
- Shake your iPhone to undo your last text input
- Mail app automatically detects times and dates and converts to a link.Tap the link & add event to calendar
- Close apps by double tapping home button & holding icon in bottom bar. Tap the red minus icon to close.
- Use the alphabet bar on the right in the contacts list to quickly jump through your stored names
- Swipe left on the home screen to get to spolight search to search your iPhone for apps, contacts etc
- Drag one app into another to create a folder. You can have up to 12 apps in a folder
- Settings -> General -> Network and turn off 3G to save battery
