  • Get OnSwipe if you have a WordPress site

Get OnSwipe if you have a WordPress site

I came across a very cool new WordPress plugin the other day called, OnSwipe.

Basically what the plugin changes your wordpress site, into a very cool magazine type “app” on the iPad. You can swipe through your blog posts, as well as comment on them, as if you were paging through a magazine. The plugin also changes orentation from portrait to landscape when you turn your actual iPad. You can also choose a specific image for the “front cover”

Check out these 2 screenshots that I took of The Ballito News website on the iPad using OnSwipe

As you can see, this is an instant change from your normal site to an awesome looking iPad styled site. And the best part…is it is free. So if you have a WordPress site, you need to get Onswipe !

  • Cool Spy Cam keyring gadget

I came across this awesome little gadget the other day. It is a spy cam on a keyring, which looks like a random car or house remote. The cam records video at a resolution of 720 x 480 at 30fps. The sound also picks up pretty good as well. The video is recorded to a Micro SD card (not included), and can also take still images at a resolution of 1280 x 1024.

The cool thing about this gadget is that, it is always with you, and you can use it anywhere. The other day, I went for a ride on my Mountain bike, and I taped it to the front of the bike, and recorded some of my ride. I have also seen guys use it on their cars & motorbikes as well. The cam is also pretty simple to use, and takes 1 button to start recording, and no one will be any the wiser. You can also use the spycam as a webcam on any computer as well !! (info below)

    [toggle title_open=”Instructions” title_closed=”Click here to see the instructions” hide=”yes” border=”yes” style=”default”]

There are two function buttons. The one closest to the camera hole is designated REC. The other one is inboard of the REC button and designated ON/OFF.

    • The device has a built-in rechargeable battery that needs to be fully charged when the device is first used.
    • Insert a MicroSD card before using the device.
    • Press and hold the ON/OFF button (bottom button) to turn on the device. The Orange LED will turn on, which means the device is in STANDBY mode.
    • Press and hold REC (top button) to start recording video. The orange LED will blink fast three times, then turn off. This means that during video recording, the LED is not lit, which makes it less likely to be spotted.
    • Press REC to pause video recording and save the recording to that point. The LED will turn on. The device is now in STANDBY mode. In STANDBY mode, press REC to take a still image. To continue recording, press and hold REC.
    • To record a still image: Turn on the device by pressing and holding ON/OFF to enter STANDBY mode. The LED will turn on. Press REC to record a single still image. The LED will flash. Press REC for another image.
    • To set the date/time of the device, which is used to timestamp media recordings, create a text file in the root of the MicroSD card with a file name of TAG.TXT. Open the file and add the following three lines: [date] 2011/03/29 03:45:00 Replace the date and time above with the values you want. Save the file. Turn the device off, then back on to reset the clock based on the text file.
    • To turn off the device, press and hold ON/OFF until the LED goes out.
    • The device powers off by itself after a period of inactivity.
    • Use the provided USB cable to connect the device to your computer. You will now be able to see the recorded files on your device, which you can view. Video files are saved in a .avi format
    • If the device stops functioning, use the reset button to reset the device. The reset button is recessed inside the small hole between the MicroSD card and the USB port
    • For clearer instructions, you can check out this very cool instruction sheet (http://bit.ly/caminstructions)
    • You can also use the spycam as a webcam (Windows). To do this, while your cam is plugged into your PC, press & hold in the “capture” button. Then press and hold the “power” button in for 3 seconds. Release the Power button, and then release the capture button. This should install device drivers, and you can use the cam as a webcam.
    • I came across a very cool WINDOWS app, which sets the time for you automatically. You can download it here (http://bit.ly/camtimesetter) . Once you have the app open, plug in the cam, and it should set the correct time on the device[/toggle]

This video gives you an idea of what the spy cam is all about. I haven’t managed to upload any of my videos yet, but as soon as I do, will update the post with it.

  • Top 5 iPhone QR Code Apps

I have been doing a bit of research around QR Codes in South Africa, and they are definitely on the rise. There is so much potential for them, especially in SA, where most people have a cellphone, and although I am only looking at iPhones in this post, a lot of cellphones are starting to support them now.

There are hundreds of different QR Code reader apps available for the iPhone, and I have done some research around them, to see which are the best. I put 11 QR code readers which I had heard about and found on the app store, and tested various aspects of the apps, as well as trying to see if different types of codes can be snapped. These included calendar entries, contacts, URL’s and even a modified code (on the right).

Most of the readers managed with the basics like URL, text & SMS, but a lot of them struggled with the trickier codes like calendar entries & the modified codes. Here are the top 5 in my findings. To see the full results you can see the Google Doc test sheet here. All test codes were created using the Google QR Code API , except the altered image. I have also included QR code links to each app on the right of each app, to download them from the app store.

    5. Quickmark – $0.99

    Calendar – No
    Contact Information – Yes
    Email Address – Yes
    Geo Location – No
    Phone Number – Yes
    SMS – Yes
    Text – Yes
    URL – Yes
    Altered Image – No

This was one of the first QR code readers I ever used, thanks to Google who suggested it when they launched their QR code product in the US. The best thing about this app, and something very few of the apps do, is that i opens straight to the screen where you can snap the code. Despite it’s small limitations, this is one of the better designed apps, and a must have for QR Codes.

    4. RedLaser – Free

    Calendar – No
    Contact Information – Yes
    Email Address – Yes
    Geo Location – Yes
    Phone Number – Yes
    SMS – Yes
    Text – Yes
    URL – Yes
    Altered Image – No

Although this app isn’t designed specifically for QR Codes, it does a pretty good job with it. The app is fast and resolves the codes quickly as well. The fact that it scans normal barcodes and compares prices etc is a bonus, and another keeper in the QR Code folder on your iPhone

    3. BeeTagg Reader Pro – Free

Calendar – No (Reads the image, but does not display the information correctly)
    Contact Information – Yes
    Email Address – Yes
    Geo Location – Yes
    Phone Number – Yes
    SMS – Yes
    Text – Yes
    URL – Yes
    Altered Image – No

Another favorite of mine, but the fact that it doesn’t read the calendar info correctly is a bit of a let down. The interface in the app is clean and simple, and you can also read codes from previously saved photos.

    2. i-nigma – Free

    Calendar – No
    Contact Information – Yes
    Email Address – Yes
    Geo Location – Yes
    Phone Number – Yes
    SMS – Yes
    Text – Yes
    URL – Yes
    Altered Image – Yes

One of the only 2 apps that could read the altred image gives this a nod at number 2, but still can’t read vCalendar events. Pity though, otherwise this would be right at the top. Another plus for this app is that it is also an “instant-open” app, which means no tapping before snapping your code.

    1. – $1.99

    Calendar – Yes
    Contact Information – Yes
    Email Address – Yes
    Geo Location – Yes
    Phone Number – Yes
    SMS – Yes
    Text – Yes
    URL – Yes
    Altered Image – Yes

Although the price of this app might be a bit high, it is well worth the $2. The app is super fast, and is the the only app able to capture each of the tests successfully. I have to admit, this is by far one of the best apps I have used overall on the iPhone, and is a MUST have if you are going to be snapping QR codes. Just get it :)

So as you can see a lot of the QR code apps are very similar, but the key for me is speed, which Optiscan delivers. There are constantly new QR code readers being added to the app store, so if you know of any I have missed, leave a comment below, and I will add them to the google doc for future reviews. If you want to keep up to date with the goings on in the QR world, I highly recommend http://2d-code.co.uk/ which delivers the best QR code news daily.

  • Woolworths climbs on the QR code bandwagon

As you may know I have always been a huge fan of QR codes and the potential they offer. Slowly but surely South African companies are climbing on the QR code bandwagon, and using it to promote their brands.

But I was very pleasantly surprised on Saturday to see Woolworths have also started using QR codes to promote their latest sale, by displaying a huge QR Code poster on the store window.

The code resolves back to a .mobi site, which gives you more info about the sale. You can also watch a video of the TV ad promoting the sale. They did suggest Beetagg reader on the poster as well as the direct URL (woolworthssa.mobi). That said, the mobi site doesn’t have too much information about the actual sale. From the poster one would have thought you would have seen what is exactly on sale. Another thing they could have done, although not a biggie, is to have a specific url per store to see how many sucessfull each stores campaign was.

All in all though, well done to Woolworths, and I’m looking forward to see what they come up with next in the QR code arena !
