  • The Graeme Watkins Project Corridors of the Mind album launch

The other day on my way to work, I heard a catchy tune on the wireless called Music Affair by a local band called the Graeme Watkins project. The sound has a bit of a britpop/killers vibe to it. Check out the video below.

I found out from the guys that they will be launching their new album called, Corridors of the Mind, this Wednesday (9th) at Tanz Cafe in Fourways. The event is open to the public & tickets are R80 at the door or R150 and you get the new CD. They also generously offered 4 sets of double tickets to the launch, so if you are keen, leave a message below (by wed midday) and I will get your details to the guys. If you attendding on the night they will also be giving away a CARPARELLI SLIMM BLACK FLAME guitar, signed by The Graeme Watkins Project. Nice !

I think I’m gonna keep an eye on these guys, pretty sure they gonna be hitting it big soon :)

  • A rather muddy day out on the Cannondale

After Ballito was hit by a freak downpour on Friday night, I was a bit unsure about doing another off road ride at Holla Trails on Saturday morning. But after being convinced by Sean & Rich, we went ahead with it and met up at 6am, for another ride.

During the week I had ridden twice along the beach front in Durban (at 6am), from Blue Lagoon to Ushaka & back. Although it was “flat” riding, it helps with understanding the bike, as well as it being constant peddling. It is an amazing time of the day, and so awesome to see so many people out at that time of day, running & cycling along the promenade. We really do live in a beautiful part of the world. So lucky !!

Anyway, before we started Rich mentioned we would be extending our route from last week, by adding on a few KM. He also mentioned we would be heading up “Vomit Hill”. Not thinking too much of it, and after a nervous laugh, I climbed on the trusty Cannondale, and set off. We followed much of the same route from last week, through the single track. The rains had caused much havoc with the trail, and mud was high on the menu. There were plenty of slides, and a few broken trees to climb over. I also had my first tumble after misjudging a stream. Nothing serious though :)

After we finished the single track, we turned left, and followed the rest of the “Orange” route. After a short while, Rich stopped and said “You see those trees at the top of that hill”, pointing to what could have easily being the top of Mount Kilamanjaro, “We need to get there !”. At first I thought he was joking, but alas, he wasn’t. The name, “Vomit Hill” immediately sprang to mind, and I felt my stomach repeat the tumble I took earlier.

We carried on, and needless to say, there was a bit of sweating, swearing, stopping, walking, and lots of moaning. But, (eventually) we did it, and I got to the top. The name “Vomit Hill” did not stand up to it’s name (yay) and from there on, it was pretty much plain sailing. I have to admit though, I felt a bit more broken at the end of the ride. But after gulping down a few glasses of ice cold water, an ice cold coke & a toasted bacon and egg, I felt (semi) human again.

    "Vomit Hill"

Check out the elevation on the Runkeeper iPhone app activity below. The climb to the top of the hill was about 4km, and the total climb was around 282m. Although it doesn’t sounds that hectic to seasoned professionals, to a beginner, like me, it seems like Mount Kilamanjaro :)

A huge thanks to Sean & Rich for putting up and encouraging me, I knew it was gonna be a toughie, and am pretty stoked that I made it. I know next time, will be a bit easier, and I can’t wait to tackle it again !!

  • 1st ride on my new Cannondale out at Holla Trails

1st ride on my new Cannondale out at Holla Trails

This morning I woke up at a mind numbing 5am, to get ready for my 1st ever “proper” mountain bike ride out at Holla Trails here in Ballito. The ride was the first of my #Project2011 where I am aiming to try and change my lifestyle completely and lose some (read:lots) weight. Thanks to the guys over at Cannondale, I have a shiny new bike to ride, and today I really put it through it’s paces.

I met up at 6am with my mates Rich, Sean & my brother in law Roy. I warned them all ahead of time that there WOULD be walking, and even some moaning :) But suffice to say, I didn’t moan…walked yes. Rich planned a great route which involved some uphills(the walking) and some really cool single track riding along side a river, which meant some mud.

In total we did about 10.5KM in an hour and half. It may not sound that great,  but the ride was pretty “technical” in terms of riding on the single track, which is a narrow path where you really need to concentrate and watch what you doing. I have to admit, I really enjoyed the single track riding which made for a lot of messy fun. The last stretch of the ride was pretty tough for me, as it was just “carry on cycling” riding, along a flat road, which meant pushing myself, which was good.

After the ride, I really felt good and expected myself to flake out, but didn’t feel that way at all. I think my healthy eating plan that I started this week has hugely contributed to this, and I can feel I had loads more energy. What a difference !!!

I used 2 apps on my iPhone to keep track of our progress. I will be doing a post soon on some of the apps I have been using to keep track of my health and fitness.

You can check out my Runkeeper activity log of the ride, which shows a map, speed, altitude etc. I really enjoy seeing after the fact where we have been and analysing the ride.

I know that in the next few months, I will be putting a lot more effort into the riding, and set myself a goal for the end of the year of doing an actual race, so expect a few more of these type of posts popping up soon :

  • Bet on World Cup Games – 15 & 16 June

Well the World Cup is in full swing now and South African’s are loving every second of it. Apart from the Vuvuzela debate waging on, I think everyone is having a good time. I was a the Germany vs Australia game on Sunday night, which was out of this world. The atmosphere at the game was incredible, and I would highly recommend getting to a game if you can.

The next 2 days see a couple of interesting games ahead as the 1st round of games end and teams go into their 2nd round. Bafana Bafana take on Uruguay in an all important clash for both teams, after drawing in the first round of matches against Mexico and France respectively. I honestly think we can pull it off, with the support that we all saw on Friday, and a few extra paarps on the Vuvu, will def help our boys on the way.

The Guys from GreatOdds.com have got all the betting worked out for the next couple of games, so I thought I would take a look at whats happening over the next 2 days to see who the favorites are. There are some really good odds here, and the minimum bet for all the games is only R8, so almost have nothing to lose.

The big one for all of us is our boys, who are stacked at 2/1 which means R100 will get you R300 should we take it. Uruguay on the other hand are at 13/10 meaning you will take home R230 if you place the same bet.A draw will net you R320
