  • Creating solutions to our power crisis

The last 2 weeks have been rather frustrating for most of us South Africans, as we have experienced power outages almost every single day, sometimes up to 6 hours a day. It is frustrastraing, but the reality is we need to live and work around it, for the next 5 – 7 years. I’m pretty sure that something will be done before then, otherwise, the economy is just going to crash, and we will fall in a deep dark (no pun intended) depression.

But we need to look for solutions. And it can be done. The next big problem we are facing as a world is Global warming. Why not use the one to try and fix the other. The sun is shining so much brighter, and we should be using it to create energy from solar panels, to create electricity.

Imagine, we install a couple of rugby field size “solar panel plants” in the Northern Cape. Maybe near Upington. The Northern Cape is one of South Africa’s poorer provinces with a high unemployment rate. Kill 2 birds with 1 stone. Create employment, while helping the economy grow in the region, AND we get more electricity. It can be done. 2 sites in the USA have recently been installed using this technology.

Stafford Masie, wrote a brilliant post on his blog about how we need to look for renewable energy sources, and has links to both these projects in this post.

Another source of electricity is in our homes. Every day. Even when Eskom does turn our power off. How ? Our Telephones. On every telephone line there is 12v of current running through, regradless if the elctricity has been turned off or not. We could use this source to power essential items around the house. Recharge batteries, be able to use our laptops…there are so many opportunities. This American site has a few different products which you can use this source of power .

The bottom line is that we need to find solutions to the problems. We are in a crisis, but we just need to put our heads together and solve it…

(OK, just as I was about to push the publish button, I get shed into darkness…Karma is a bitch :) )

  • New Year = New Look

I decided that it was time for a new look. 2008 is going to be a great year, and I have already had some good chats with a couple of guys about some exciting projects ahead.

I searched around the net, and while there are loads of themes out there, I came across a brilliant post from Smashing Magazine, which had 100  Excellent WordPress themes. I browsed through these, and eventually set my heart on WP Premium theme from R.Bhavesh

He released his premium theme as a free theme, which is really great. Setting up and changing over was fairly simple, and the snags I ran into  were fairly simple to sort out.

Let me know what you think of my new look, and kick me if I forgot to put anything back :)

  • Free Advertising on top bloggers sites

    clipboard04.jpg

I recently signed up with Entrecard, which is a site that allows you to advertise your blog on top bloggers sites.

Entrecard is simple. You sign up and submit a 125×125 advert. You then “campaign” to advertise on other peoples blogs. This is done by paying with Entre-credits. These credits are earned by “dropping your card” on other users websites. You can also earn credits begetting people to advertise on your site.
If you look on the right of my site, you will see the entrecard which is advertised on my blog. I have my card showing on a couple of other blogs at the moment.

The increase in website traffic is phenomenal, and I have already seen entrecard as one of my top referrers.

Sign up with Entrecard now @ www.entrecard.com

For a great review on this service, check out Christopher Mills’ post.

  • Make some money with Namedrive

I recently came across an awesome site called Namedrive. Namedrive allows you to park any unused domains, that are sitting around , and you earn cash off of the clicks.

In about 2 months I have made almost $90, from only about 12 domains. The cost per clicks are reasonable, and the website is also simple to use. Below is some proof of some of my domains:

Namedrive allows you select custom themes and page layouts, and you can even include keywords, to narrow down results on the parked pages. You can also advertise your domain for sale.

If you would like to see an example of one of my pages you can go to http://www.highrise.co.za

If you have a few domains lying around that you aren’t using, sign up to Namedrive, and you can earn some cash.

  • Garmin Nuvi 200: View Favorite Location Coordinates

One of the problems I have come across with my Garmin Nuvi 200, is that you cannot see the co-ordinates of your saved favorite locations.

I have found a way around this, albeit a bit of a long winded way, you can still see the co-ordinates.

    1. Turn your GPS onto GPS simulator mode. The simulator mode allows you to view a route or location, even if you are not at that specific location, or if you cannot pick up GPS satellites. To turn your GPS into GPS simulator mode:
Settings -> System -> GPS Simulator -> ON

      SettingsSystemGPS Simulator

    2. Go back to the main Screen and click Where To -> Favorites

    3. Choose your location that you require the GPS co-ordinates for.

(I have chosen a restaurant called Ciao)

    4. Click on SHOW MAP

    5. Zoom in as far as you can using the PLUS button in the top right , and click on “Set Loc”. (Set Location) and then click GO

      760.jpg

    6. When the screen comes up with “Do you want to simulate driving this route?”, click NO

    7. Once this screen disappears you will see your vehicle icon, placed on your favorite location. Click on the vehicle icon and it will show you the coordinates of your saved favorite location.

    8. You can now share your locations, with other people, by giving the exact coordinates.
