  • Moses Mabhida Stadium Tours

A while back I went on a tour of the new Durban world cup 2010 stadium. This was done before the stadium had been completed, and was looking amazing.
The public are now able to go on a fully guided tour for R75 for a 90 min tour of the whole stadium. I think it is well worth the price, given the enormity and beauty of this stadium.

From the Durban host city FIFA website:

If you’ve ever wondered what it takes to build a FIFA-approved, Olympic-sized sports stadium, and then come on down and visit the stadium to find out! Or, travel up the iconic arch of the stadium to the viewing platform, where you will experience spectacular panoramic views over the ocean and the city. The more adventurous can walk up the 550 steps of the southern side of the arch to the viewing platform! For details on how to visit the stadium, read on.

    Sky car

A tourist attraction in its own right, the Sky Car will ferry up to 20 visitors to the stadium arch’s highest point, where they can enjoy a breathtaking 360-degree view of the city. The Sky Car consists of a single cabin mounted on an undercarriage that runs along steel tracks fixed to the top of the north arch.

The funicular runs along the length of the north arch from the lower station to the upper station at the Sky Platform. The gradient of the arch varies substantially; therefore the funicular is fitted with a hydraulic self leveling floor. The cabin is framed by glass windows with entrance and exit doors at either end. The roof consists of glass louvers that can be opened electronically by the driver for ventilation. The passengers travel up the arch in a standing position holding onto the handrail around the perimeter.

Note: Trips in the sky car dependent on weather conditions.

  • Umhlanga Lighthouse gets a condom for World Aids Day

    LH1

A couple of weeks ago the guys from “The Unlimited“, the same people who were behind Winston the Pigeon, came up with a competition where you could guess how they would be transforming a lighthouse from around the world into something on the 1st of December.

This morning they did the deed, so to speak, and covered the Umhlanga lighthouse in Durbs, with a “condom” to signify and celebrate world Aids day.Well done to The Unlimited for this fantastic initiative, and highlighting a huge problem we are faced with every day.

    LH2

I took a quick swing past there on my way to work this morning, and took a quick pic or 2. Apologies for the distance and quality, was in a bit of a rush.

You can also see a video of the whole thing on Zoopy:

  • Hooters opens in Umhlanga, Durban

I heard a rumour not so long ago that the well-known pub in Umhlanga, Cottonfields, would be closing down. I been there a couple of times, and had a few good parties there, one which involved a bachelors party, which I have vague memories of :)

Now I heard they have officially closed down to make way for the American restaurant chain, Hooters. Now most guys will know about Hooters for their um, waitresses. I have also heard the Chicken wings are awesome.  To give you an idea of the stature of women they are looking to employ as waitresses, I found the advert calling for waitresses on a local site called Modelbase.

…Hooters hires women who best fit the image of a Hooters Girl to work in this capacity and believe that the Hooters Girl is as socially acceptable as a Dallas Cowboy cheerleader, Sports Illustrated swimsuit model, or a Sharks Girl.

The Hooters Girl uniform consists of orange shorts and a white tank top, short-sleeve or long-sleeve T-shirt.

    Sounds nice enough :)

I came across a pictures, from the East Coast Radio website, of some of the waitresses who will be working at the new Hooters in Umhlangha.

Anybody keen to join me for chicken wings and beer…. :)

  • Moses Mabhida Stadium Tour

UPDATE: To see more information about tours in and around the Moses Mabhida Stadium click here- https://www.marcforrest.com/2009/12/08/moses-mabhida-stadium-tours/

I had a fantastic opportunity on Friday to go on a tour round the new stadium that is being built in Durban for the 2010 FIFA world cup. It really is an eye opener, and I think will become a major stadium round the world. The sheer enormity of it, as well as the spaced out seats really makes it. A couple of things that I personally noticed while we were on the tour

    • The ABSA stadium, home to the Sharks next door,  is a very “tall”stadium, in the sense those top seats at ABSA are high up and you will battle if you suffer from vertigo. Seating at MM is more “level”. When you walk in to the stadium you go 2 levels down, and then you have your seating. So you will effectively be “in line” with the players
    • The players change rooms sound awesome. We couldn’t get in, but it sounds like they are huge, and have jacuzzis
    • Peoples park on the South side sounds like it will be a great area for families. Big open spaces with restaurants. I think I can see myself going there for family picnics once it is open
    • The whole stadium can be evacuated in 8 minutes !!! that is going to be a HUGE selling point

I managed to take a couple of photos, and managed to get 1 awesome pano shot together. Unfortunately I didn’t have my tripod with me, so I had to crop out a bit of it. The original is 12788 x 2892, but have attached a resized 3704 x 838. For the full size image check out (http://www.flickr.com/photos/marcforrest/3873506175/)

I have a couple more pics, taken from my phone as well as on the DSL. The iPhone pics are up, and am busy uploading the others. You can check them out on my Flickr -> http://www.flickr.com/photos/marcforrest/sets/72157622069322251/

I have also replied with a huge post on the SkyScraperCity Forums, with some of the questions asked by the guys on the forum.

Overall, I really think Durban is the potential winner in the stadium contest. I’m really looking forward to settling down in one of those chairs next year, and watching Bafana Bafana win the World Cup :)
